Letters: Donald Trump is the new George Wallace

AP

A lot of people compare Donald Trump to Hitler or Mussolini — finding a scapegoat for our problems and arguing that “those people” do not belong in our society. But there is a better comparison, less absolutely evil, and more modern.

If he had not been shot, George Wallace might well have been the Democratic nominee rather than George McGovern in 1972. Wallace used many of the same techniques as Trump, and had a fervent group of followers.

I despised Richard Nixon, but if Wallace had been nominated, I would have voted for Nixon for the sake of the country. I hope mainstream Republicans will accept Hillary Clinton or the Libertarian or Green Party candidate, because Trump will destroy everything we the people have stood for.
