Letters: There’s this little problem with releasing cougars to thin the deer population ...
Has someone gone crazy (“Too many deer on the road? Let cougars return, study says,” July 21)? You cannot tell a cougar to only hunt deer in the woods. The deer doing harm are in subdivisions, because people are taking their home.
When the deer population goes down, who will tell the cougars to stop killing? They will kill you, your child or maybe your pet.
A simple solution would be to hire or get volunteer trained hunters with night scopes to go into the area where there are problems and take the deer out. Give or sell special hunting permits around heavily used highways to reduce the population. When it gets down, stop the permits.
This you can control; the cougars you can’t. Once you bring them in, you will eventually be paying a bounty to get rid of them. We already have coyotes roaming neighborhoods.
