Letters: Respect should be race-neutral
My dad, Donnie Sox, started coaching Dixie Youth Baseball in West Columbia in 1957 and became a mentor to young boys both black and white. Most blacks didn’t have enough money to buy cleats or a glove, so he would buy these things for them. He would even pick them up and take them home.
When we went on vacation, he always took some ballplayers, both blacks and whites. I remember the time we went on vacation and pulled into a small motel where the sign on the swimming pool said whites only. I asked my Dad what he was going to do, and he said the black ballplayer were going swimming just like anyone else.
A real man doesn’t judge a man by the color of his skin. We all need to get along with each other respectfully.
