Letters: Writer should focus on learning, not condemning
Rather than criticizing U.S. Rep. James Clyburn, it would be better that Bill Hunter try to understand where Mr. Clyburn is coming from (“Clyburn should focus on healing, not division,” Aug. 15).
The majority of my ancestors came here from Europe, so I will never know what it's like to be stopped, arrested and even shot for the offense of driving while black. That's why, when someone like Mr. Clyburn or U.S. Sen. Tim Scott speaks about this, it behooves me to try to understand.
I think racial reconciliation will come when we learn about our history (the good, the bad and the ugly). Trying to forget the past when we are still living with its effects will not bring healing.
