Letters: Random drug testing doesn’t constitute profiling
The article about Lexington District 1’s plan to require random drug testing of the 2,400 students who apply for parking passes noted that “one civil rights group warns it could be illegal if it leads to profiling students” (“Want to park your car? Pass a drug test,” Aug. 7). Would someone explain to me how random drug testing could lead to profiling?
Is the group suggesting that the random selection could be altered to test more students of a particular gender, race, etc.? If so, such mistrust is regrettable. Or does the civil rights group fear the random selection, conducted fairly, could yield a higher incidence of people in a certain group testing positive for drugs? If so, it seems like it is profiling by anticipating this.
