Columbia Little League team plays for spot in World Series on Monday

A local team is representing South Carolina in the Little League World Series, with their opening game on Monday.

The Trenholm Little League Majors softball team is in Warner Robins, Georgia, on Monday to take on a team representing Virginia in the opening round of the Southeast regional tournament, playing for a chance to play for Little League’s top prize.

The 12-and-under side won South Carolina’s championship with a 7-5 win over Irmo in the state final on July 9, earning the girls a shot at the World Series.

The winner of this week’s Southeast regional — which also includes representatives of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia — will advance to the World Series, to be played Aug. 6-13 in Greenville, N.C.

Monday’s game is such a big deal that it will be streamed at 2 p.m. on ESPN+ along with other regional action. The Nickelodeon Theater on Columbia’s Main Street is even hosting an official watch party for Trenholm Little League.

The watch party is free, but the theater asks you RSVP for your seat ahead of time.
