South Pointe blows out AC Flora, advances to SCHSL football semifinals
The South Pointe football team won in dominant fashion once again.
The Stallions ran up the score early in their 56-14 victory against AC Flora on Friday night at District Three South Stadium in the SCHSL Class 4A quarterfinals.
No. 1 seed South Pointe (12-1) is now set to host third-seeded Westside in the 4A semifinals at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Senior quarterback and safety J’Zavien Currence, the South Carolina signee, rushed for three touchdowns and threw for two more.
“It was just staying the course,” Currence said. “We just keep getting better and better, seeing ourselves getting better at what we’re doing, and playoffs, we’re getting hot. So watch out.
“It means a lot. It’ll be my last home game, and I just want to go out with a bang and go win it in Orangeburg.”
How South Pointe beat AC Flora in the SCHSL quarterfinals
Currence fired a 52-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Dailan Duncan on the Stallions’ third play from scrimmage, putting them ahead 7-0.
South Pointe stopped AC Flora (11-2) on fourth down early, and its offense continued marching downfield. Senior running back RJ Brown powered into the end zone for his first touchdown from 13 yards out.
Brown scored once again, breaking through the Falcons’ defense for a 15-yard touchdown that made it 21-0 late in the first quarter.
The Stallions drove early in the second quarter with a big pass play, and Currence sprinted for a 15-yard touchdown that gave them a 28-0 lead.
AC Flora executed a flea flicker and scored a long touchdown. Senior quarterback Roper Wentzky threw it to senior wide receiver Charlie Scott, who went over the top for a 60-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Blake Betette.
Currence rushed for an 11-yard touchdown, putting the Stallions up 35-7.
Betette, a Dartmouth commit, returned the ensuing kickoff for a Falcons touchdown.
Freshman running back Rasean Brown rushed for a 38-yard touchdown, his sixth of the season, giving South Pointe a 42-14 lead.
Punting late in the first half, the Stallions took two delay-of-game penalties, and the punt bounced near the 10-yard line. The ball was poked out, and junior linebacker KJ Burg recovered the fumble to give South Pointe excellent field position.
Currence scored quickly, rushing for a 12-yard touchdown. The Stallions took a 49-14 lead to halftime.
Freshman wide receiver Tarion Starnes hauled in a touchdown pass from Currence, scoring the first of his career.
Notable
South Pointe, the only team to beat Northwestern in each of the past two seasons, has won 12 consecutive games since dropping its season opener, a 14-10 loss to Hough in the Keep Pounding Classic.
AC Flora, of Columbia suburb Forest Acres, drops its second game of the season, with both losses coming against the Stallions.
South Pointe’s offense scored at least seven touchdowns for the fourth consecutive week.
Coach said it
“We’ve got the best strength coach in the country,” South Pointe head coach Bobby Collins said. “Coach West does an excellent job with our guys. What we do behind the scenes is what makes us different. I know for the fans, we always want to win. We always want to give them a show. But our kids, they put it out on the grass, on the practice field, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. So they know on Friday, they can come here and put on a show. That’s what you do here in Rock Hill.”
What's next for South Pointe?
The Stallions play No. 3 seed Westside, which posted a 24-21 overtime win against seventh-seeded Camden. South Pointe will face Westside in the SCHSL Class 4A semifinals next Friday.
