NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani Joins in on Liberty's Commissioner's Cup Triumph

The New York Liberty won their second WNBA Commissioner's Cup title on Tuesday, and City Mayor Zohran Mamdani celebrated with the team.

For the second time in June, the City of New York has captured another basketball title through the Liberty's 93-85 Commissioner's Cup championship win over the Las Vegas Aces at Barclays Center. This comes weeks after the New York Knicks won the NBA title for the first time since 1973.

New York City Mayor Mamdani was hyped over the Liberty's championship win. He joined in on the celebrations by sharing the team's post along with two emojis.

" " Mamdani posted on his official X account.

Breana Stewart starred for New York, as she finished with a double-double of 25 points and 11 rebounds, along with four assists, two blocks and two steals. She was also awarded the tournament MVP.

Other top contributors for the Liberty were Sabrina Ionescu with 26 points, five rebounds and five assists, and Pauline Astier with 15 points, five rebounds and four assists.

This championship win also etched New York in the history books, as they were the first team in league history to win multiple Commissioner's Cup titles.

New York first reigned in the in-season tournament in 2023. The Aces were also their opponent in the final. Jonquel Jones was named the MVP of that game.

Stewart and Co. are looking to keep this momentum going as they aim to win the WNBA title this season and replicate their success from two years ago.

The Liberty crashed out early in the playoffs last season against the Phoenix Mercury in the first round with a 2-1 series loss.

Now, they currently sit as the No. 2 team in the Eastern Conference with a 12-7 record.
