Clemson’s NFL track record a draw for 4-star commit Cornell Powell
Lost in the bustle of finishing off a top-5 class – and adding No. 1 2016 running back Tavien Feaster – a second four-star receiver in a week’s span jumped on board for Clemson’s 2016 group of football recruits.
Rose (N.C.) wide receiver Cornell Powell visited for Junior Day last weekend and knew it was Clemson by midweek.
“It was difficult because it ends my recruiting process,” Rose told a local TV station, “but at the same time, this is where I wanted to be, so it would have been pointless to continue anyway.”
“I just felt comfortable from my first trip to Clemson.”
Powell racked up more than 100 catches and 2,400 receiving yards as a sophomore and junior, scoring 40 times. Clemson’s NFL appeal for receivers, producing DeAndre Hopkins and Sammy Watkins and more, was especially a draw for the 6-foot-1 athlete.
“They have had more receivers to the NFL in the past four years than any college team – then why not be another statistic?” Powell said. “Every day, coaches call and come up to the school and now I can not only concentrate on my senior year of football, but also concentrate in the classroom and not be taken out as often and improve my grade.”
Powell picked Clemson over from Ohio State, Georgia and UNC. He also had offers from Alabama and Florida State.
He joins a seven-man 2016 class, along with fellow 4-star receiver T.J. Chase (Bradenton, Fla.). Clemson moved up 10 spots in the ‘16 rankings to just outside of the top-five Wednesday.
