ACC baseball: Boston College nips Clemson

Down one run in the top of the ninth, Clemson loaded the bases but couldn’t push a run across in an 8-7 loss Saturday at Boston College, which evened the ACC series heading into Sunday’s noon finale.

The Eagles (16-17, 6-10 ACC) outhit the Tigers (17-18, 8-9) 13-12 and broke a 7-7 tie game with a run in the eighth to hand Clemson its fifth consecutive one-run loss.

Tiger catcher Chris Okey’s two home runs were not enough

BC took a 2-0 lead on a Gabriel Hernandez double in the second inning.

Clemson got a run back in the third on Tyler Krieger’s RBI single. After BC picked up two more runs in the fourth go to up 4-1, Okey hit his first homer of the day, a solo shot.

The Tigers rallied in the sixth with three runs, all coming on homers. Steven Duggar hit his second of the year to get Clemson within a run. Okey then clobbered his team-leading eighth long ball, a two-run shot, to give the Tigers a 5-4 lead.

The Eagles scratched across a run in the bottom half to tie the score, but sacrifice fly RBIs by Eli White and Duggar put Clemson back up 7-5 in the seventh.

BC tied the score in the bottom half on a two-run homer by Stephen Sauter, and the Eagles took an 8-7 lead on an RBI single by Blake Butera in the eighth.

White, Dugger and Krieger drew walks to start the ninth, but Reed Rohlman, Okey and Chase Pinder all struck out.

Clemson starting pitcher Zach Erwin had his shortest outing in a month. He lasted 32/3 innings and allowed four runs on seven hits. Reliever Taylor Vetzel (1-2) suffered the loss after giving up three runs on four hits through 31/3 innings.

BC’s Justin Dunn (4-2) earned the win by pitching 22/3 innings in relief.
