C.J. Davidson had his “best day” of the spring, according to Clemson coach Dabo Swinney, after leading all rushers with 100 yards on six carries against the Brent Venables-coached Orange squad on Saturday.

“The White defense was obviously the better of the two defenses. I screwed that one up,” the Clemson defensive coordinator joked. “I actually chose the Orange offense instead of taking the defense, so that’ll be the last time I listen to anybody else.”

A 19-yard run by Davidson led to his 1-yard touchdown run that gave the White squad a 14-10 advantage late in the first quarter.

After Trevion Thompson caught an 18-yard pass from Tucker Israel, an early enrollee freshman, Davidson scored for the second time on a 54-yard run around the corner to put the White up 28-10 with 7:35 to play in the first half.

Defense finds motivation Defensive end Kevin Dodd led the Orange with six tackles, including a sack. Linebacker Kendall Joseph was tied with Jayron Kearse and Jefferie Gibson with six tackles.

“We came out great for the White team,” said Shaq Lawson, who had three tackles and one for a loss. “We got a lot of three-and-outs and finished strong. Our main goal is to win to get that next Friday of workouts off. Once we put it all together, we’re going to be one great team.”

Swinney satisfied Swinney was pleased with the entire special teams unit, including a new-look return unit. He said punter Andy Teasdall did well, while kicker Ammon Lakip nailed all of his chances.

“It was fun,” Swinney said. “It was competitive. I think for the most part it was a pretty clean game. Not a lot of penalties. We had one bad snap. We didn’t really have any turnovers until right there at the end we had the late pick and a fumble.”
