Clemson basketball coach Brownell makes push for impact transfers

Clemson basketball has open roster spots and the college basketball transfer market is buzzing.

The Tigers are set to host transfer guards from Vanderbilt (Shelton Mitchell) this weekend, Alabama (Ricky Tarrant) on April 24, and Robert Morris (Marcquise Reed) on May 7.

A former four-star prospect and point guard, Mitchell averaged 20 minutes per game with 11 starts as a freshman, scoring 4.3 points and dishing 3.3 assists a game. Mitchell had offers nationwide out of Oak Hill Academy and SportalkSC sees Charlotte and N.C. State as other area landing spots.

Alabama’s Tarrant is a graduate transfer, playing two seasons with Tulane and another with the Crimson Tide. He averaged 13.1 points per in 26 minutes a game before a late January leg injury held him out for the rest of the season. Tarrant visits Memphis this weekend per ESPN.

Clemson saw Robert Morris’ Reed earlier this season, scoring 21 on 9-of-14 shooting in a 64-57 loss at Littlejohn to close 2014. He averaged 15.1 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.1 assists as a freshman for the Colonials, who made the NCAA Tournament First Four and advanced to the round of 64. He will visit Tulsa, Massachusetts and Southern California per DMVElite’s Marcus Helton.

In non-transfer news, Clemson offered 2016 power forward Javin Montgomery-DeLaurier out of St. Anne’s-Belfield (Charlottesville, Va.) this week. He has offers from Vanderbilt, Texas, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest among more schools. DeLaurier averaged 20 points and 13.2 rebounds per game last season.
