5 things to know about Clemson QB signee Trevor Lawrence

Cartersville quarterback Trevor Lawrence signed with Clemson Wednesday morning. Here are five things to know about the five-star signal caller.

1. First No. 1

Trevor Lawrence is the first No. 1 overall recruit in the 247Sports composite rankings that Clemson has signed. Lawrence also is ranked No. 1 by Rivals. Clemson’s other top five recruits all-time are No. 2 Da’Quan Bowers, No. 3 Dexter Lawrence, No. 4 Xavier Thomas and No. 5 Roscoe Crosby. Thomas also is in the class of 2018.

2. Sorry, Deshaun

Lawrence broke Deshaun Watson’s career passing yardage and touchdowns record. He finished his high school career with 14,352 yards and 161 touchdowns. Watson, who led Clemson to the national title last season, passed for 12,961 yards and 155 touchdowns at Gainesville High.

3. Low picks

Lawrence threw only one interception during his senior season and it came in the first game of the year. He finished 2017 with 41 touchdowns while leading his team to an 11-1 record. In the final 11 games of the year, Lawrence passed for 39 touchdowns and no picks.

4. Streaking

Lawrence led Cartersville to 41 consecutive victories before it was upset in the playoffs, falling 21-17 to Blessed Trinity. The win streak spanned from the first game of his sophomore season in 2015.

5. Lots of QBS

Lawrence will compete with a loaded group of quarterbacks for playing time in 2018, assuming there are no transfers. Tigers starting quarterback Kelly Bryant is returning, along with former four-star recruit Zerrick Cooper, five-star quarterback Hunter Johnson and three-star quarterback Chase Brice.

247Sports evaluation of Trevor Lawrence

“Lawrence just has ‘it’. Not only does he has have the prototypical size , but he has a big arm, he is very mature for his age, and he has the intangibles. He can make any throw you want a top quarterback to make. Not only does the ball pop coming out of his hands, but he throws with great touch. He throws a great deep ball and he makes the swing passes look easy. Lawrence is still a little lean, so he needs to add mass to his frame, but he stands tall in the pocket and that weight will come in time. For a big, tall quarterback, his release is quick and compact. He is more mobile than most expect him to be. He throws with accuracy on the move and he can extend a play. He is a natural leader, he reads his progressions well and he is humble. He has all the traits you look for in an elite signal caller.”
