With Jeff Scott spending time at USF, Dabo getting back to roots as receivers coach
Jeff Scott won’t be around Clemson for about the next week as the new South Florida head coach gets settled in down in Tampa.
Scott has a staff to start putting together and plenty of recruiting to take care of before rejoining Clemson on Thursday as the Tigers prepare to face Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl on Dec. 28.
With Scott spending the next several days in Tampa, Dabo Swinney will help new receivers coach Tyler Grisham prepare Clemson’s wideouts for the postseason.
“I’m kind of excited that (Scott’s) going to be gone for a little while. I can take them wideouts back,” Swinney said last week in Atlanta before the College Football Awards show. “That’s my passion.”
While Swinney will help Grisham during bowl prep, Clemson’s head coach has full confidence that the former Clemson receiver is ready to take over as the Tigers receivers coach full time. Grisham has been on staff at Clemson for six years, including the past three as an offensive analyst, waiting for his opportunity to move up.
“That’s been our plan for a long time. We finally got a chance to execute the plan. It’s never not been the plan,” Swinney said. “Tyler has been in line for a receiver job for quite a while. He’s had a couple opportunities to leave, but just stayed. He’s done a great job.”
What is it that gives Swinney confidence Grisham is ready to fill the void left by Scott? For one, Grisham knows exactly what Swinney expects.
In addition to being on Swinney’s staff for six years, he also played for Swinney at Clemson.
“He brings great knowledge. He’s 31, so he’s got great experience, great youth, energy as well. He was a great player himself. He just has a great understanding of the fundamentals and techniques,” Swinney said. “I coached him, so he knows me inside and out, knows exactly what the expectations are for that position, how we do things. He knows our offense inside and out. He brings continuity to go along with the knowledge. He’s going to be a great recruiter for us. He’s already been impactful in our program the last six years. This is just another role for him, just promoting him onto the field.”
