Watch: Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence blows a kiss to LSU fans after scoring touchdown
Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence entered Monday’s College Football Playoff national championship game with less hype than his counterpart, LSU’s Heisman-winning Joe Burrow.
But once the game actually began in New Orleans, Lawrence got the first score, rushing into the end zone untouched from one yard out to put his Tigers up 7-0 in the first quarter. Facing the LSU fans at that end of the stadium, he celebrated by blowing a kiss.
That touchdown capped a 67-yard drive for Clemson, highlighted by a long catch-and-run from tight end Braden Galloway partially erased by a blindside blocking foul, and a 19-yard reception from wide receiver Tee Higgins. Lawrence also had a nine-yard rush earlier in the drive.
Through four drives, Lawrence is 6-for-10 passing with 112 yards, while Burrow was 6-of-11 passing for 84 yards in the same number of chances. While Lawrence led the Tigers to a national title last year and is undefeated as a starter, Burrow led the nation in passing touchdowns and was second in yards while leading LSU’s prolific offensive attack. Burrow is considered a strong contender for the top pick in the 2020 NFL draft, and Lawrence is the favorite to go No. 1 in 2021.
