How many Clemson spring sports seniors plan to return, what it will cost
The NCAA announced in March that it’s giving spring sports seniors for 2019-20 an extra year of eligibility, and several Clemson student-athletes are set to take advantage of the ruling.
Some schools around the country, including Wisconsin, are declining to give seniors the option to return. Others, such as Iowa, are still working through the decision.
But a spokesperson from Clemson Athletics confirmed to The State that the Tigers are allowing their spring seniors to return.
Clemson has nine spring sports: baseball, softball, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s track and field; and women’s rowing.
There are 35 spring athletes eligible to return for an extra year, and as of now, Clemson expects 25 of them to do so. That number could fluctuate over the next couple of months. The estimated cost of the athletes returning is $375,000, according to a Clemson spokesperson. It will be paid for by IPTAY, the school’s athletic fund-raising group.
Clemson has not indicated which athletes will return. The full list of those eligible to come back is listed below:
