USC QB’s famous sign appears at Clemson peaceful protest. He gladly shared it
From one peaceful protest to another.
A familiar sight showed up Saturday in the Upstate at the on-campus, peaceful protest organized by the Clemson football team. South Carolina quarterback Jay Urich’s “matter is the minimum” sign was in the hands of TIgers running back Darien Rencher.
Urich shipped the sign to Rencher in time for Clemson’s “March for Change” rally. Various images of the USC QB’s sign went viral on social media a week earlier at a peaceful protest in Columbia that the Gamecocks took part in.
“He gave me the sign,” Rencher said. “He shipped it to me. It’s the exact same sign. That’s my brother, man. I’ve known him since I was 16-17. We both had visions of going to different universities, rival schools and trying to shine some light on campus.”
Rencher (T.L. Hanna) and Urich (Wren) both played high school football in the Upstate. Rencher called Urich one of his best friends.
“Honestly, we’ve always piggy backed off each other, different things with our team or like faith things, stuff like this. We talk every week,” he said. “He’ll be in my wedding. He’s my dawg.”
Said Urich on Saturday via Twitter, along with Gamecock and Tiger emojis: “We’re in this TOGETHER!”
Rencher this week asked on social media for the fans who show up at Death Valley on Saturday to cheer on the Tigers football team to also show up on campus this Saturday for a peaceful protest. The message was received.
Around 3,000 people with ties to Clemson University participated in the Clemson Community Peaceful Demonstration Saturday evening on Clemson’s campus.
The event started at 6 p.m. Organizers of the event included Rencher, linebacker Mike Jones, quarterback Trevor Lawrence and receiver Cornell Powell.
“Obviously it kind of went viral,” Rencher said. “So I was like, ‘Ay, bro, if it ain’t broke I ain’t gonna try to fix it. Send it to me. It’s a great sign.’ Matter is the minimum. I feel like it is. There’s so much truth in that. Black Lives Matter is legit the minimum.”
