Clemson athletics announces more positive COVID-19 tests

The Clemson University athletics department released updated coronavirus numbers on Friday, revealing that six additional people in the athletics department have tested positive for COVID-19 since June 26.

Of those six new cases, four are student-athletes and two are staff members.

Clemson previously announced on June 26 that 37 football players have tested positive since testing began in early June. The university did not say how many of the four new cases among student-athletes are football players.

Clemson tested all 292 student-athletes and staff between its previous release on June 26 and its newest update Friday, with six of the 292 tests coming back positive (approximately 2%).

The university has performed 722 COVID-19 tests thus far, with 53 coming back positive. Of the 53, 47 are student-athletes and six are staff members.

Clemson athletics has not had any hospitalizations related to COVID-19, and more than half of the positive cases have been asymptomatic.

All individuals who tested positive for coronavirus as of the last update on June 26 have completed CDC-recommended isolation and are either back participating in athletics activity or awaiting final medical clearance, the school said.
