Clemson athletics jumps from 0 positive COVID-19 tests to nearly 20 in a week

A week after Clemson athletics had no positive COVID-19 cases, the university announced that 18 people in the athletics department tested positive for the coronavirus this week.

The number includes 14 student-athletes and four staff members across five sports, Clemson announced.

The 18 positive cases was out of 677 tests, equaling a 2.66 percent positive rate.

Clemson is no longer announcing positive tests by sport with competition set to begin next week. Identifying players by sport could reveal the identity of a student-athlete who tests positive.

The last time Clemson announced positive cases by sport it stated in late June that 37 football players had tested positive.

The Tigers football team will travel to face Wake Forest on Saturday, Sept. 14 for its season opener.

Since June 1, Clemson student-athletes and athletic staff have completed 2,812 COVID-19 tests, with 78 positive results (65 student-athletes, 13 staff), 2.77% positive, and no hospitalizations.
