Clemson soccer exhibition canceled after members of program test positive for COVID-19

Clemson’s first men’s soccer game of the 2020 season will have to wait.

The Tigers were scheduled to play at Virginia in an exhibition on Friday, but that match has been canceled after two members of the program tested positive for COVID-19, the university announced Thursday afternoon.

Clemson’s first game will now take place when the Tigers host Wake Forest on Sept. 18 at 7 p.m.

“The health and safety of our student-athletes comes first. We have trained really well and our student-athletes have been committed to doing things the right way. We’ve made the decision not to travel to Virginia for this exhibition, and will use the time to continue to monitor our team and try to prevent further spread,” Clemson soccer coach Mike Noonan said in a release. “We have a tremendous amount of respect for our opponent and hope to see them down the road.”

Clemson athletes are being tested for COVID-19 three times per week.
