How Clemson’s student ticket distribution will work this season

Clemson football will play its home opener on Saturday against The Citadel, and students and IPTAY members will be in attendance.

Clemson will have 19,000 fans on hand, with 2,300 to 2,400 of the tickets going to students, throughout the 2020 season. Clemson’s student section will be in the south upper deck portion of Death Valley, isolated from the rest of the stadium.

Students must have a negative COVID-19 test before they are allowed into the stadium.

Tickets will be rewarded through a lottery system, and students had to pick which games they wanted to enter for last week. Students were notified on Monday whether or not they received tickets for The Citadel, and mobile tickets will be distributed Thursday.

“They pick all of the games up front that they’d like to attend, and then it’s a random lottery,” Clemson Associate Athletic Director for Strategic Communications Jeff Kallin said. “It’s really similar to the system that we’ve had in the years past. We did have a limited number of students this year that purchased season tickets. We didn’t charge them for them. And they are entered into the lottery.”

The lottery system is a points-based system, with one point given to freshmen, two to sophomores, three to juniors and four to seniors. Students can also receive an extra point for each year of IPTAY Collegiate Club membership.

COVID-19 testing is currently taking place for Clemson students and staff members at Littlejohn Coliseum and NewSpring Church.

In addition to having to have a negative COVID-19 test to get into Saturday’s game, students must also have a negative test to begin on-campus classes, which start Sept. 21.

Students will be deemed as “cleared” once they receive a negative coronavirus test, and it is likely that students will have to show on their phones that they are cleared prior to entering Memorial Stadium on Saturday, according to Kallin.

In addition to the 2,300 to 2,400 students that will be in the south upper deck, Clemson will also have 300 band members on the hill who will be social distanced.

Clemson will distribute student tickets on an individual game basis, while all IPTAY members who opted into the season will receive at least two season tickets.

“We think people are looking at Clemson as an example for how stadiums can operate, should operate and could operate,” Kallin said.
