Tank for Trevor? Yes, Clemson QB notices he trends with fans on NFL Sundays
Trevor Lawrence appears destined to be the No. 1 overall pick in next year’s NFL draft, and he is already being described as one of the top pro quarterback prospects of all time.
ESPN’s Todd McShay said this summer that Lawrence has his highest draft grade for a QB since Andrew Luck in 2012, and Lawrence has done nothing to slow the hype through the first two games of the 2020 season.
Lawrence has been the talk of social media on more than a few occasions over the past couple of weeks, but not just for his play on the field. He is also regularly trending on social media on Sundays as fan bases post about how he could help their team and how they should “tank for Trevor” to get the No. 1 overall pick.
“Obviously if you’re on social media at all you can’t help but see some of it,” Lawrence said with a smile. “But it’s just funny. It’s a new team every week, so I don’t think there’s any real insight of what’s going to happen. It’s a long season.”
Entering Saturday’s game against Virginia, Lawrence has completed 81 percent of his passes for 519 yards, with four touchdowns and no interceptions. He has also rushed for three scores and is playing the best football of his career.
McShay believes Lawrence is the “no-brainer” No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL draft, and it’s easy to understand why.
“With a big arm, great mobility for his 6-foot-6 frame, excellent poise under pressure and off-the-charts intangibles, it wouldn’t be long before he was among the game’s best,” McShay said in his early mock draft.
Lawrence’s Clemson teammates certainly agree and say they’ve had a little fun this season as they check social media during NFL games.
“We definitely notice. I always see somebody’s talking about tanking, or ‘We’re so bad. We need Trevor,’” Clemson linebacker Mike Jones Jr. said. “I be thinking about that too. I’ll be like, ‘Yea, I wonder where he’s gonna go play at?’ See a lot of things. Hear a lot of rumors. Try not to pay too much attention to it, though.”
Lawrence, who announced prior to Clemson’s opener that this would be his final season of college football, is trying not to pay too much attention to it either.
But he can’t help but chuckle when he logs onto Twitter and sees that NFL fan bases are tagging him in tweets, begging and pleading for him to end up with their team.
“It’s just kind of funny, but I don’t take it too seriously,” Lawrence said. “I know in this position you can’t really predict where you’re gonna go, what’s going to happen. All I can do is enjoy my time while I’m here, perform the best I can, and enjoy where I’m at right now. We’ll see next year what happens.”
