SLED has ‘active investigation’ involving former Clemson player
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has an active investigation involving former Clemson running back and police officer Yusef Kelly.
“No additional information is available while the investigation is ongoing,” SLED public information officer Tommy Crosby told The State on Wednesday.
The investigation began in December 2020, Crosby confirmed.
WYFF and other outlets first reported on the investigation into Kelly.
Kelly was a police officer from 2006 to April of this year, according to his police record. He worked for three agencies, including Anderson County Sheriff’s Office and Easley Police Department. He had worked at Easley Police Department since 2013. On April 28, the department fired him citing misconduct as an officer, his record said.
During a SLED criminal investigation Kelly “did make false, misleading, deceitful and incorrect statements to law enforcement officers,” his police record said. Criminal charges are currently pending against Kelly but his record does not specify the exact charges.
Kelly played at Clemson for three seasons and perhaps is best known for photos that captured him kicking a South Carolina player in the head during a brawl between the two squads in 2004.
