Mike Reed is now Clemson football’s assistant head coach, the school’s board of trustees approved Wednesday morning.

Reed, who has been the Tigers cornerbacks coach since December 2012, became the special teams coordinator on Dec. 14. He adds the role of assistant head coach after former defensive tackles coach Todd Bates — who held the title for less than a month — left to join former defensive coordinator Brent Venables at Oklahoma. Venables, who took his first head coaching job with the Sooners in December, was Clemson’s assistant head coach for three years.

With the change, Reed goes from an annual salary of $700,000 to $750,000. His promotion was one of many contract changes for multiple Clemson football staffers Wednesday.

Tigers defensive ends coach Lemanski Hall, running backs coach C.J. Spiller and wide receivers coach Tyler Grisham all received one-year contract extensions. Hall moved up from making $500,000 to $625,000, while Grisham and Spiller also earned raises. Both earned $150,000 raises for a salary of $450,000.

Thomas Austin’s hiring as the team’s new offensive line coach was also approved. He’ll make $450,000 annually with a two-year contract through 2024.

“He’s been incredibly well-groomed and well-prepared,” Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said of Austin. “He’s going to do a fantastic job with that offensive line along with Brandon Thomas, who has come in to be our on-field graduate assistant coach.”

Swinney first made the announcement after the Cheez-It Bowl victory that Austin would replace a retiring Robbie Caldwell, who will now be the director of high school relations and player development, taking a pay decrease from $640,000 to $250,000. Kyle Richardson, who is now the passing game coordinator and tight ends coach, used to hold the position.

Woody McCorvey received a one-year extension as Clemson’s chief of staff, earning a $120,000 pay raise to $500,000.

Other football coaching staff changes/extensions:

  • Joey Batson, Director of football strength and conditioning; one-year extension ($625,000)
  • Jeff Davis, Director of football player relations/external affairs; one-year extension ($315,000)
  • Danny Pearman, Director of scouting; one-year extension ($250,000)
  • Mike Dooley, director of football administration and player personnel; one-year extension ($325,000)
  • Jordan Sorrells, Director of recruiting and player development; one-year extension ($315,000)
  • DJ Gordon, Director of football operations and external affairs; two-year extension ($250,000)
  • Bill Spiers, Senior assistant for special teams and offensive analyst; no extension ($250,000)

Tigers head coach Mike Noonan was given a two-year extension through 2027 with a salary of $400,000.

Noonan led the team to the program’s third national championship in 2021 after a disappointing loss in the national title game six years before. Under his tutelage, Clemson has gone to the NCAA tournament in six of the past seven years with trips to the quarterfinals in 2016 and 2019. The program has won two ACC tournament championships (2014, 2020) to go along with a regular-season title in 2019.
