Monte Lee assembles first staff at Clemson
Monte Lee’s contract as Clemson baseball coach consists of $350,000 in salary plus fringe benefits and the potential for up to $200,000 annually in performance bonuses.
The agreement runs through the 2020 season but includes provisions for rolling an additional year should he remain with the program through July 1, 2016. Also, the athletics department retains discretion to add another year if Clemson appears in a College World Series.
Lee was hired June 18 to replace Jack Leggett, who was fired after 24 seasons as coach. Leggett’s contract paid $400,000 annually plus bonuses and fringes.
The base of Lee’s contract will be $250,000 annually plus $125,000 in supplementary compensation. All money comes from athletics revenue generated primarily from football and basketball ticket sales, ACC revenue sharing and IPTAY donations. Baseball is not a self-sustaining program.
Lee might earn bonuses if the team wins individual ACC Tournament and NCAA Tournament games, plus an ACC title would be worth $10,000 and a national championship $80,000.
Coincidental to the highlights the contract, Clemson released the names of Lee’s four assistants. Returning will be former Leggett assistant Bradley LeCroy as recruiting coordinator and director of baseball operations Brad Owens.
Former Duke assistant Andrew See joined the staff as pitching coach, and longtime Elon assistant Greg Starbuck will be a volunteer assistant.
LeCroy served as an assistant at Clemson for eight seasons (2003-05, 2011-15). He also will work with infielders and assist with hitting. LeCroy has helped recruit several top-20 classes in recent years. In both 2014 and 2015, he coached five hitters to All-ACC seasons including first-team All-ACC catcher Chris Okey in 2015. LeCroy, 37, also coached at Tennessee (2008-10) and Western Carolina (2006,07).
See, 36, spent the previous three seasons (2013-15) at Duke, where his 2015 team had a 3.29 ERA. See also served as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Ohio (2007-12) after being an assistant at Appalachian State (2005-06) and UNC Greensboro (2004).
Starbuck, 51, served as an assistant coach at Elon for 17 seasons (1999-15), including 11 as associate head coach with duties as recruiting coordinator and hitting instructor. Starbuck will work with the hitters, running, infielders and catchers.
Owens served as director of baseball operations at Clemson for eight seasons (2008-15). His duties include coordinating travel and camps.
The staff salaries were not announced.
