Recently decommitted DB picks up Clemson offer

A week after decommitting from Pittsburgh, defensive back Tony Butler (6-2 195) of Lakewood, Ohio, picked up an offer from another ACC school: Clemson.

“Coach Reed hit me up and we started talking,” Butler said. “It’s definitely a huge offer. The culture and atmosphere, I can see it through television how much the fans love Clemson.”

Butler has never visited Clemson but he plans to spend an official visit on the Tigers this fall.

He has been to Ohio State and Michigan and is going back to Ann Arbor on Wednesday. He said the strongest interest right now is coming from Clemson, Michigan, Rutgers, Minnesota and Arizona State. He does not have a favorite.

As for Pittsburgh, Butler said he decommitted because they would not allow him to take official visits to other schools as a Pitt commit. He has totally dropped the Panthers from consideration.

Butler plays corner and safety but schools like him primarily as a corner where his size would be a big advantage.

“Coaches like how versatile I am and my size is kind of rare,” he said. “There are things I can do normal corners can’t.”

Last season Butler had 3 interceptions and broke up 10 passes. At this point he does not have a timetable for a decision.

Butler wasn’t the only defensive back offered by Clemson Tuesday. The Tigers also offered USC commitment J.J. Givens of Mechanicsville, Va. Givens committed to USC at the Showcase camp in June and said at that time he was shutting down his recruiting.

Another Clemson football note: Class of 2017 WR Nico Collins of Pinson, AL told AL.com he has as top five of Clemson, Auburn, Alabama, Georgia and Ole Miss. He had 39 catches and 15 touchdowns last season.

And the Clemson basketball staff Tuesday offered 2018 PG Devon Dotson of Charlotte. Georgia Southern and Hampton also have offered.
