Former Tigers wide receiver moving on from Clemson football coaching staff
A former Clemson football wide receiver is moving on from the program after spending two seasons on coach Dabo Swinney’s staff as a graduate assistant.
Artavis Scott, who’d been on staff since early 2021 as an offensive graduate assistant, announced Thursday night via X (formerly Twitter) he was moving on the from team as the Tigers approach spring practice later this month.
Scott, 29, was a three-time All-ACC receiver at Clemson and was part of the school’s 2016 national championship team. The school’s career receptions leader with 245, he also played in the NFL from 2017-20, primarily for the Los Angeles Chargers.
In his goodbye post, Scott thanked Swinney, wide receivers coach Tyler Grisham, his fellow graduate assistants (many of whom are also Clemson lettermen) and the players he “had the pleasure of coaching,” who were “like little brothers to me.”
“It was fun while it lasted, but it’s my time to move,” Scott wrote. “Until next time.”
Scott, in his post, didn’t specify what was next for him in his career. But David Hood of TigerNet.com reported last week Scott was leaving to accept the wide receivers coach job at Howard, an HBCU in Washington, D.C.
The Bison, who compete at the Division I FCS level in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, had an open receivers coach position after Lindsay Lamar, Howard’s offensive coordinator and WRs coach, took a job at Pitt.
After bringing Scott on staff ahead of the 2021 season, Swinney said he and Scott had talked “a couple of times” about the receiver moving into a coaching role.
“He’s kind of ready to transition,” Swinney said at the time, per AllClemson.com. “He’s been in the NFL the last four years. He wants to coach, and man, it’s just perfect timing. What a great addition he’s going to be. ... Excited to have him back.”
Scott, a Florida native, was a remarkably productive player at Clemson. He was a Freshman All-American in 2014 and ended up setting Clemson’s all-time receptions record in just three seasons (his 245 catches also rank fifth in ACC history). Scott had 2,480 career receiving yards and 19 career receiving touchdowns and was part of Clemson’s first two College Football Playoff teams.
He was one of many former players on Clemson’s support staff in 2023. Last year’s media guide also listed former QBs Tajh Boyd and Cole Stoudt, LB Stephone Anthony, DL Da’Quan Bowers, OL Tyrone Crowder and DB DeAndre McDaniel, among others.
Clemson starts 2024 spring practice on Wednesday, Feb. 28.
