The rising senior from Acworth, Ga. was diagnosed with nodular sclerosing Hodgkin’s lymphoma in May and was drafted by the Red Sox in the 32nd round on June 10, the same day he started his chemotherapy.
It was announced on July 17 that Schmidt would return to the Tigers for his senior season after a junior season that saw him post a 2-3 record and 4.67 ERA in 18 appearances.
"Clate has been a big part of our pitching staff the last three years," head coach Monte Lee said. "He has made more starts than any other returning starter on the 2016 team. We expect big things from Clate.”
