Clemson defensive back planning to enter transfer portal, report says
A second Clemson football player is planning to transfer, per a report.
On3 Sports reported on Friday night that Clemson junior safety Sherrod Covil Jr. plans to enter the transfer portal when it opens Monday. Covil, a former four-star recruit in Virginia, has appeared in 32 career games for the Tigers.
Covil saw some early playing time this season and made his first career start against Florida State, but he saw his playing time dwindle down the stretch and didn’t play a snap (defense or special teams) against South Carolina last weekend.
To date, he’s been credited with 36 career tackles (22 solo), one tackle for loss and one pass deflection. Covil has played 123 defensive snaps this season but only 15 snaps over the past six games combined (including zero in four of those last six).
Covil (5-11, 200 pounds) is the second Clemson player to announce his intentions to enter the portal, following redshirt junior receiver Troy Stellato earlier this week.
Stellato did not travel with the team for Saturday’s ACC championship game vs. SMU in Charlotte, as coach Dabo Swinney confirmed earlier this week. It’s unclear whether or not Covil traveled or will be part of the team’s dress list vs. the Mustangs.
Covil was the nation’s No. 205 overall recruit coming out of high school in 2022. He hasn’t redshirted at Clemson and has one remaining year of eligibility.
