Clemson commit cancels official visits due to Swinney’s policy

Wide receiver Cornell Powell of Greenville, N.C. has been a Clemson commitment since February and that's not going to change now that he's cancelled some official visits to other schools he had planned. Powell revealed his plans to take other visits last week the same day linebacker Rahshaun Smith decommitted from Clemson so he could take other visits.

Dabo Swinney's policy is players committed to Clemson can't take official visits elsewhere. Powell knew the policy and decided he wasn't going to test it.

"It was between me and me," Powell said. "They respected my wishes but I talked it over with my mom and decided it wasn't worth missing out on Clemson."

Powell had set official visits with Georgia, Oklahoma and Ohio State but he's wiped the slate clean except for his November 7th visit to Clemson, and he has no regrets.

"I feel as if I made the right decision," Powell said. "Me and coach Swinney are cool, He's a great guy and I can't wait for him to be my coach."

With Powell firmly locked into the 2016 class, the Tigers now can focus on their last remaining receiver target, Diondre Overton of Greensboro, NC. He is down to Clemson, Tennessee, Nebraska, North Carolina and NC State.

Overton said Monday night he Clemson, Tennessee and Nebraska are are the top of his list with no favorite. He visited Tennessee in late July and he talked with Clemson recruiter Jeff Scott Monday.

"Pretty much just telling me they need me down there and they love me and my family and they're just waiting for me to come down there," Overton said.

Overton has not scheduled his official visits but said he would return to Clemson soon for a game. He has not decided when he will make his decision.

Overton also is a basketball prospect and he said all the schools said they will give him the option to play that sport as well.
