Clemson tight end Ian Schieffelin was arrested on suspicion of DUI just before 2 a.m. Sunday and will miss the start of the 2025 season as a consequence.

A team statement indicates there were no injuries and nobody else was involved. Clemson football ended preseason camp on Friday, and players had a designated off day Saturday. The news was first reported by TigerNet.com.

The City of Clemson Police Department made the arrest, according to a Facebook post the agency made Sunday evening: “Following a traffic violation on Tiger Boulevard, the Clemson Police Department made the arrest of Clemson University football player Ian Schieffelin for DUI at 1:47 AM last night. He was released on bond at 9:10 AM this morning. The investigation is still ongoing.”

Coach Dabo Swinney, in a statement provided to The State, said the program was aware of the incident and Schieffelin will face discipline.

“Clemson Athletics has a clear policy by which we will abide, so Ian will miss some competition to start this season as a consequence,” Swinney said Sunday. “We’re obviously very disappointed by the situation, but we are very thankful no others were involved and no one was hurt.”

Schieffelin (6-7, 260) is a former All-ACC Clemson basketball player who joined the football team this season after four years playing basketball for the Tigers.

The length of Schieffelin’s expected suspension is unclear. Clemson’s student-athlete handbook states that an athlete arrested for and/or charged with DUI must be “withheld” from at least 10% of their games in their next applicable season. For football, 10% of the regular season would be slightly over one game.

Preseason No. 4 Clemson opens the season against No. 9 LSU on Saturday, Aug. 30 at Memorial Stadium. Clemson’s next three games are vs. Troy (Sept. 6), at Georgia Tech (Sept. 13) and vs. Syracuse (Sept. 20).

Although Schieffelin’s switch from basketball and football has drawn national attention and he has football experience, he is not expected to be an immediate starter for Clemson. Swinney recently mentioned Olsen Patt-Henry, Josh Sapp and Christian Bentancur as the Tigers’ top group of tight ends.

Swinney has also raved about true freshman tight end Logan Brooking, and Clemson has former walk-on Banks Pope as a veteran option.
