Top storylines for the game
- In accordance with new ACC rules, Clemson and Georgia Tech released their first weekly “availability reports” this week. Clemson will be down some key players. The Tigers listed starting WR Antonio Williams, starting SS Khalil Barnes, starting LT Tristan Leigh and co-starting RG Elyjah Thurmon as out on Friday. Georgia Tech starting QB Haynes King and DE A.J. Hoffler were not listed on GT’s reports this week and are available to play Saturday.
- Clemson’s offense needs to pick it up. The Tigers returned their starting quarterback, Cade Klubnik, along with four of five offensive linemen, one of the best wide receiver trios in the country and a good mix of other offensive weapons. Yet, through two games, they rank No. 110 nationally in scoring offense (18.5 ppg), No. 120 in total offense (288.5 ypg) and tied for No. 95 in yards per play (5.11 ypp). Even with a talent drop at RB, where converted WR Adam Randall is the starter, that’s not the production anyone was expecting from a group led by Klubnik and offensive coordinator Garrett Riley. And it needs to change — fast.
- Speaking of Georgia Tech: The Yellow Jackets have earned a reputation as a giant killer under coach Brent Key. GT is 6-6 against ranked opponents in Key’s tenure, a solid mark. Against ranked ACC opponents, though, Georgia Tech is 6-1. The Yellow Jackets have also won multiple games against ranked teams three years in a row for the first time since 1955-57. No. 12 Clemson is the first ranked team Georgia Tech will play this season. ESPN’s analytics give Georgia Tech a 55.6% chance of winning the game, a high mark for an unranked team.
- Because of some scheduling quirks, this is Clemson’s first time playing in a “fully charged” Bobby Dodd Stadium since 2018. Clemson played in 2020 at Georgia Tech, but stadium capacity was reduced because of the COVID-19 pandemic. And Georgia Tech’s 2022 home game vs. Clemson was held at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, a venue the school occasionally utilizes for big games. The majority of Clemson’s roster has never played at Bobby Dodd Stadium (capacity 51,193), which has coordinated a “Whiteout” for Saturday’s game.
Clemson vs. Georgia Tech players to watch
Clemson WR T.J. Moore: It’s been a slow start to the season for Moore, who only has five catches for 56 yards in two games. Can the sophomore starter get going?
Clemson S Ronan Hanafin: The converted wide receiver has been a standout so far for the defense with a team-high 20 tackles plus an interception and a forced fumble.
Georgia Tech QB Haynes King: He’s a gamer and the straw that stirs the drink for Georgia Tech. In GT’s Week 1 win vs. Colorado, King became only the second FBS player with at least 140 passing yards, 140 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns in a season opener since 2000 (Jalen Hurts).
Georgia Tech DL Amontrae Bradford: Had his first two career sacks vs. Gardner-Webb last week and is the team’s highest-graded defender per Pro Football Focus.
