Clemson vs. UNC Vegas odds

Clemson is a 14-point road favorite against UNC, according to the VegasInsider.com consensus betting line. Some were surprised to see that betting line, considering Clemson is 0-4 against the spread this year and lost at home to Syracuse as a 17.5-point favorite two weeks ago.

But the point spread has held steady and actually moved up a bit in the road team’s favor after opening at Clemson -12.5. It’s also the worst point spread UNC has faced so far this season.

Weather forecast for Chapel Hill, NC

Partly cloudy with a high of 77 degrees and light winds, according to Weather.com. There is a 9% chance of rain during the day, but it’s not expected to majorly impact the noon game.

Top storylines for the game

  • Clemson and UNC both released their initial ACC availability reports Thursday night, in accordance with league policy. After getting a number of key starters back for the Syracuse game, the Tigers are mostly healthy. Clemson’s only notable unavailable rotation player is OL Elyjah Thurmon (a part-time starter). UNC, whose starting quarterback for Saturday is TBD, listed QB Gio Lopez as questionable. Lopez has started every game, but veteran Max Johnson (formerly of LSU and Texas A&M) has gained some ground and could start against Clemson after Lopez was injured against UCF two weeks ago.
  • Saturday’s coaching matchup will be one for the history books. It will be only the second time in college football history that a multi-time Super Bowl champion coach (Bill Belichick) has faced a multi-time FBS national champion coach (Clemson’s Dabo Swinney). The only other instance came in the 1993 Blockbuster Bowl, when Bill Walsh (a three-time Super Bowl champion with the San Francisco 49ers) led Stanford to a win against Penn State and Joe Paterno (a two-time national champion with the Nittany Lions). There have been five other instances of a coach with at least one Super Bowl facing a coach with at least one FBS title. All involved Walsh.
  • Clemson’s offense continues to struggle. The Tigers rank No. 116 nationally in scoring offense (19.6 points per game), and in three games against P4 competition they have scored 10, 21 and 21 points, respectively. Starting quarterback Cade Klubnik ranks No. 97 out of 100 qualifying quarterbacks in passer rating, and he has four interceptions on 148 pass attempts this season after throwing just six interceptions on 486 pass attempts last year. Offensive coordinator Garrett Riley’s unit desperately needs a “get right” game.
  • The UNC game – which most view as winnable for Clemson, given the Tar Heels’ struggles under Belichick – has suddenly become a big one in Clemson’s quest to reach six wins and make a bowl game. Yes, six wins. That’s what a 1-3 start does to you. Clemson needs to win five of its last eight games to reach six wins. One of those, against FCS Furman, shouldn’t be an issue. But of Clemson’s seven remaining P4 opponents, UNC projects as the most winnable at 77.5%, according to ESPN’s analytics. No other game is above 57.6%.
