Top storylines for the game

  • Clemson and Boston College both released their initial ACC availability reports Thursday night in accordance with league policy. The Tigers are arguably as healthy as they’ve been since Week 1: The only notable rotation player out is OL Elyjah Thurmon, who was hurt leading into the UNC game and was expected to sit vs. Boston College. Thurmon is one of Clemson’s top seven offensive linemen and has started a few games at right guard. Boston College continues to deal with a staggering number of injuries, especially on defense, and listed 14 players as questionable and five as probable on its Thursday report.
  • Turnovers were a big part of Clemson’s defense in Weeks 1-2. The Tigers forced two in their season opener against LSU and three the following game against Troy. Since then, Clemson has forced … zero. Georgia Tech, Syracuse and UNC all went through an entire game without coughing up an interception or fumble to Clemson – tying the Tigers for just No. 88 nationally in turnovers forced and putting them at -3 in the turnover margin (they have eight on offense). It’s worth noting BC has been prone to turnovers and has nine in five games (T-No. 112).
  • Boston College has historically been a great matchup for Clemson. The Tigers are 15-4 against the Eagles since they joined the ACC in 2005, and Swinney is 15-1 against BC with his only loss coming in 2010. Clemson and Boston College used to meet annually in the O’Rourke–McFadden Trophy game as ACC Atlantic Division members. But changes to the ACC’s scheduling model have prevented the teams from meeting since 2022, a 31-3 Clemson road win when DJ Uiagalelei was the starting quarterback.
  • BC is 1-4 and 0-3 in the ACC, and the Eagles got embarrassed 48-7 at Pittsburgh last weekend. But mixed into that record are some competitive results, including a 42-40 double overtime road loss at Stanford and 28-24 home loss to Cal. BC is 0-2 in one-score games this season and has lost twice while leading at halftime, indicating a team that’s been close but cannot finish. A strong passing offense (313.4 yards per game, No. 11 nationally) is BC’s best weapon.
