Top storylines for the game
- Clemson and Florida State both released their initial ACC availability reports Thursday night. There were no major surprises on Clemson’s list, but defensive tackle Vic Burley and offensive lineman Collin Sadler are both considered probable to play. Among FSU’s key injury notes: starting DE James Williams and co-starting LB Stefon Thompson are questionable, and rotational running back Roydell Williams is probable.
- If Clemson loses to Florida State on Saturday, it will be their seventh-straight home loss to a power conference team. According to research from The Clemson Insider’s Will Vandervort, that has not happened since 1907-17, a 10-year period where Clemson football only played a couple home games a year. That was 108 years ago. Clemson’s six straight home losses to power conference teams (which dates back to 2024) are already its worst since losing six straight in 1970-71.
- Florida State’s record isn’t great, but its offense is legit. FSU ranks No. 1 nationally with 510.5 yards of total offense per game; leads the country in plays of 30-plus yards (33) and plays of 40-plus yards (18); and is also top five nationally in plays of 50-plus and 60-plus yards. It’s worth noting FSU had two massive outputs in early blowout wins over East Texas A&M (FCS) and Kent State (Group of Five). Specifically against P4 teams, the Seminoles drop to No. 19 nationally in total offense and No. 30 in scoring offense. For Clemson’s struggling defense, gashed by SMU and Duke in its last two games, Florida State still presents a big challenge.
- Losing to Florida State wouldn’t eliminate Clemson from bowl eligibility. It would put Clemson in a “zero room for error” situation, though. Sitting at 3-5 through eight games, the Tigers must win three of their last four games to reach six wins and qualify for a bowl (FSU, No. 14 Louisville, FCS Furman and South Carolina). Clemson, which is 2-5 against P4 opponents and has not beaten a P4 team that currently has a winning record, also must finish 2-1 against P4 teams. ESPN’s FPI says Clemson has a 37.9% chance of reaching six wins. Pro Football Focus is a bit more optimistic at 50%.
Clemson vs. Florida State players to watch
Clemson QB Cade Klubnik: The senior is coming off his cleanest game of the year vs. Duke: a career-high 385 yards, two touchdown passes and no turnovers.
Clemson S Khalil Barnes: Barnes and the rest of the defensive backs need a major bounceback game after coverage busts allowed multiple long touchdowns vs. Duke.
Florida State QB Tommy Castellanos: The Boston College transfer leads the country in yards per completion (16.77) and will be one of the best rushing QBs Clemson faces this season (50.8 yards per game excluding sacks, six TDs).
Florida State DB Earl Little Jr.: Ballhawk who has recorded an interception in three straight games and also has 52 tackles and two forced fumbles.
