The family of a former Clemson men’s basketball player is asking for support, prayers and donations after he suffered a “sudden medical emergency.”

In a GoFundMe post, the family of former Tigers point guard Rod Hall wrote that Hall suffered a medical emergency while playing in an alumni basketball game at his high school alma mater in Augusta, Georgia on June 28.

Hall, his family wrote, had to be rushed to the hospital and has since been diagnosed with a “serious neurological condition” that has left him unable to work.

Hall, 33, is “facing a long and uncertain road of medical treatment, rehabilitation, and recovery,” his family wrote. “While we remain hopeful and faithful, we know this journey will require tremendous strength, patience, and support.”

The family has set an initial fundraising goal of $20,000. As of Tuesday afternoon, over 140 donors have contributed over $8,300.

Donations will cover Hall’s medical expenses, transportation and travel costs for doctor and specialist appointments and essential household expenses.

Rod Hall’s Clemson career, stats

Hall was a member of coach Brad Brownell’s first recruiting class at Clemson and became a fan favorite for his tough playing style. He appeared in 129 games for Clemson from 2011-15, starting 106, and led the team in total assists and assists per game each of his last three seasons with the Tigers.

Hall averaged 7.2 points and 3.4 points per game at Clemson and had a career-high 9.7 points per game as a junior. A standout football player in high school, Hall played a year of college football at FCS Northern Iowa after graduating from Clemson and briefly pursued an NFL career.

He ranks among Clemson basketball’s all-time leaders in minutes played (No. 11), games played (tied for No. 8) and total assists (No. 10).

More recently, Hall has been working in his hometown of Augusta as a city employee. His family described him as a beloved community figure, volunteer and youth basketball and football coach who has a “servant’s heart” and has spent “countless hours” mentoring and training young athletes.

On June 28, Hall suffered a medical emergency while playing in an alumni basketball game at Lucy C. Laney High School in Augusta.

Hall’s family wrote on GoFundMe that their “greatest concern is helping Rod focus on healing instead of worrying about how his bills will be paid.”

“Rod has always been someone others could depend on. ... Now, we are asking our family, friends, coworkers, former classmates, teammates, former players, parents, and our entire community to help us show up for him,” his family wrote.
