Why Dabo Swinney stands by Clemson’s major decision to not sign a transfer QB
Clemson coach Dabo Swinney wasn’t directly asked about his decision to not pursue a transfer portal quarterback Thursday at ACC Kickoff.
But Swinney is well aware of the stakes attached to his biggest offseason decision, so he went ahead and brought it up anyway.
“We made a decision that we weren’t going to go and get some shiny object at quarterback,” he said. “We understand that if it doesn’t work out, we’re going to be just raked over the coals. But you’ve gotta make decisions that you believe in.”
For all the transfers Clemson signed, and the staff moves it made, it was what the Tigers didn’t do that drew the most buzz (and criticism) after a poor 2025 season.
Despite being assured by his athletic director that the money for a high-level transfer quarterback was there if Swinney wanted it, Clemson’s coach decided not to pursue a portal QB. He’s rolling with his current group, headlined by redshirt junior Christopher Vizzina and true freshman Tait Reynolds for the 2026 season.
Vizzina, a former Top 100 national recruit who backed up Cade Klubnik the past three seasons, will be Clemson’s QB1 when 2026 fall camp opens. Reynolds, who turned heads in spring practice, will be the QB2.
Swinney spoke extensively about both quarterbacks and his decision not to take a transfer QB during his appearance at the league’s annual preseason media event.
“We always do what we think at Clemson is best for our team. …” Swinney said. “There’s a reason why we had confidence in the decision that we made. That’s because we’re there every day. CV has earned the opportunity to go be the starting quarterback at Clemson, based on everything we’ve observed.”
Vizzina’s Clemson career, stats
Vizzina (6-4, 210) enters 2026 with 105 career pass attempts in 14 appearances. He made his first career last year as a redshirt sophmore against SMU when Klubnik (who started 40 games at Clemson from 2022-25) had an ankle injury.
In a 35-24 home loss, the Alabama native was 29 of 42 for 317 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions. He became the first Clemson quarterback to throw for three-plus touchdown passes in his debut since Deshaun Watson in 2014.
But Vizzina recorded just 88 passing yards and a fumble at through two quarters, and the majority of his production came in the second half with Clemson trailing SMU by multiple possessions.
Although he can’t pick his opponents, the defense Vizzina faced (SMU) was also the worst passing defense in the ACC and No. 135 out of 136 teams nationally.
Footnotes like those — and the fact that Vizzina didn’t dazzle in other 2025 spot-duty appearances against UNC and Boston College — had many fans and observers pining for Swinney to sign a prominent transfer quarterback to start in 2026.
Swinney said he’d seen enough from Vizzina to stand pat.
“You don’t ever know until you get there, but we knew that CV was a guy that was incredibly loyal to our program,” Swinney said. “This guy could have left 10 times, and somebody would have paid him a ton of money.”
Talented freshman a factor in QB competition
Another key part of his decision, he said, was Reynolds. Despite missing most of his senior season with a hamstring injury and entering Clemson as a three-star recruit, Reynolds quickly emerged as a legit player in the Tigers’ quarterback competition.
“He looks like a linebacker,” Clemson linebacker Sammy Brown said of Reynolds, who’s listed at 6-2, 215 pounds and is also a standout baseball player.
Swinney said after Clemson’s March 28 spring game that Vizzina and Reynolds were the team’s top two quarterbacks and nobody else in the room was “even close.”
Clemson tight end Olsen Patt-Henry said both quarterbacks are “hungry” to secure the starting job for the Tigers, who are coming off a disappointing 7-6 year.
“My room, quarterback room, receiver room, D-end room —nobody’s entitled to start,” Patt-Henry said. “Nobody’s entitled to anything. I feel like Coach Swinney has over-emphasized (to us): He will play the best guy.”
Magnitude of QB decision apparent to Dabo
As confident as he is in Vizzina and Reynolds, Swinney also knows the decision could bring even more criticism this fall if his quarterbacks (primarily Vizzina, who’s been internally viewed and publicly propped up as Klubnik’s successor) fail to perform.
He accepts that as part of the job.
“You don’t ever know until you get there,” Swinney said, adding that any person who tries to make decisions that please everyone is going to “fail drastically.”
At this point, it’d be a big surprise if Vizzina doesn’t trot out for Clemson in Week 1.
Whether it’s him or Reynolds, they’ll have a massive challenge on their hands. Clemson’s season opener is a Saturday, Sept. 5 night game at LSU, widely considered college football’s loudest and craziest stadium environment.
Oh, and Lane Kiffin is making his coaching debut for the SEC school.
Swinney said he’s confident Clemson’s quarterback competition (which really ramps up when fall camp starts Aug. 6) will produce the best starting option.
“I don’t have a crystal ball,” Swinney said. “Does (the competition) go into games, the season? I have no idea. We’ve just gotta see how it all plays out. But I will say this: I believe in the guys we have.”
