Clemson lands another QB commitment for 2017 class
Two days after gaining a commitment from a 2017 quarterback regarded by at least one recruiting service as the top prospect in the country at the position for the class, Clemson on Wednesday night gained another big-time quarterback commitment for 2017 in Chase Brice of Loganville, Ga.
Some of the other top offers for Brice (6-3, 200) included Michigan State, Miami, West Virginia, Virginia Tech and Missouri. But in this case, they were all competing for second.
“I’ve really known since a little before the Notre Dame game when I visited,” Brice said. “It was just the right place for me to be and the right people for me to be around and the offense just fit me well. I didn’t want to wait any longer.”
With Hunter Johnson committing Monday, Zerrick Cooper coming in next month, and freshman quarterbacks Kelly Bryant and Tucker Israel in the program, the meeting room is going to be quite crowded in the Tigers’ new football building. The more the merrier, Brice insisted.
“I’ve been around competition basically my whole life with the league we play in – 6A and about to go to 7A in Georgia,” he said. “Coming up through baseball competition and trying to win a spot. It all started with eighth grade D1 and D2, who’s going to compete and who’s going to win it out. I had an all-star team and competed there, so I’ve been around it for a while, since I was a freshman trying to compete for a job, so I’m used to it.”
This season Brice passed for 2,436 yards and 28 touchdowns with 8 interceptions.
“He has a great release and a very strong arm,” said Brice’s coach, Mickey Conn, who was a teammate of Clemson coach Dabo Swinney at Alabama. “He’s mobile in the pocket and elusive. He sees the field really well and gets the ball out quick. And he can run.”
Brice gives the Tigers four commitments for the 2017 recruiting class.
