Clemson baseball routs Notre Dame
Senior righthander Clate Schmidt tied his career-long outing to lead No. 18 Clemson to an 11-1 victory over Notre Dame on Friday.
The Tigers, who took a 2-0 lead in the series, improved to 37-18 overall and 15-14 in the ACC. The Fighting Irish dropped to 27-26 overall and 11-16 in ACC play.
Schmidt (7-4), who retired the first 16 batters, earned the win by allowing three hits, one run and no walks with six strikeouts in 8 1/3 innings. Notre Dame starter Michael Hearne (8-2) suffered the loss, giving up three runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings.
In the first inning, Chase Pinder led off with a single and Eli White lined a double. Seth Beer and Chris Okey followed with back-to-back RBI groundouts.
Notre Dame scored in the seventh inning, but the Tigers scored eight runs in their final three at-bats to put the game out of reach.
The series concludes Saturday at 1:05 p.m..
NOTE: Beer, who has reached base in 51 straight games, is one of 43 semifinalists for the Dick Howser Trophy. The award goes to the nation's top baseball player.
Beer leads the team in batting average (.392), homers (15), slugging percentage (.725), walks (51) and on-base percentage (.542) along with 46 runs, 12 doubles and 57 RBIs.
