5 things to know about Wofford as Terriers advance in NCAA Tournament
Wofford defeated Seton Hall in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday in Jacksonville, Florida. Here is some information on the Terriers:
1. The school
Where is Wofford? The college is a small liberal arts school located in Spartanburg, South Carolina. It opened in 1854. Wofford currently has an enrollment of 1,650, which is the smallest in the 2019 NCAA Tournament.
2. The mascot
The school mascot is the Terrier. The 1909 baseball team adopted a pit bull terrier named Jack. He ended up being the inspiration for a permanent mascot.
3. The basketball team
Wofford is making its fifth NCAA Tournament in school history, all since 2010. This is the best team in school history as Wofford entered the NCAA Tournament 29-4. The Terriers went 18-0 in the Southern Conference in the regular season before winning the SoCon Tournament title. Wofford has not lost a game since Dec. 19 at Mississippi State. The Terriers did not win a game in their previous four NCAA Tournament appearances but lost by less than five points in 2010 and 2015.
4. The coach
Mike Young is in his 17th season as the head coach at Wofford, and he has built the program from the ground up. Young has the most wins of any coach in school history with 298. He has been named the SoCon Coach of the Year four times, including this season, and he was named the Sporting News Coach of the Year last week.
5. The stars
The Wofford roster includes SoCon Player of the Year Fletcher Magee. The sharpshooter has 502 career 3-pointers, two behind the NCAA Division I record. The senior averages more than 20 points per game and has unlimited range. Senior forward Cam Jackson is another All-SoCon performer who averages 14.6 points and 7.5 rebounds per game and is a force inside.
