Quick practice recap
South Carolina held its fourth preseason practice on Friday and GoGamecocks.com was there. The highlights:
* Steve Spurrier Jr. said that several young receivers are starting to stand out. D.J. Neal, Jalen Christian and Jerad Washington are doing well, along with Terry Googer and Carlton Heard. Somebody besides Pharoh Cooper has to play.
* Cooper has a bit of a sprained hand, Spurrier Jr. said, but is OK. They’re letting him work in practice but are also limiting him, something they’ll do in scrimmages as well. No sense getting him hurt.
* Cooper could play all three receiver spots this year. Redshirt freshman Deebo Samuel could play two.
* Toure Boyd has been cleared to enroll at South Carolina. He had not arrived in time to practice on Friday, but is expected to be in Columbia by Saturday. He will have to have two days in helmet and shorts, then two days in shells, before he can practice in full pads like the rest of the team.
* The Gamecocks will wear full pads for the first time of the preseason on Saturday.
* Players who were injured or wore yellow jerseys were: DT Taylor Stallworth (pectoral), DE Gerald Dixon (leg), TE Connor Redmond (back), CB Wesley Green (knee sprain), DE Boosie Whitlow (hamstring), LB Jonathan Walton (knee sprain) and OL Brock Stadnik (shoulder, out for season).
* The Gamecocks will next practice at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday. It is open to the public.
Fans should turn onto National Guard Road off Bluff Road (by the old practice fields) and drive to the third gate on the right. Turn in and park anywhere in Gamecock Park.
