It’s the perfect chance to get better, and regain what was lost last week.

South Carolina was humbled at Florida. The Gamecocks couldn’t do anything against a beat-up team and had their winning streak (and SEC East hopes) snapped quicker than a wishbone at Orson Welles’ supper table.

But the season is still alive, and a goal for this team has its heart strongly beating. The Gamecocks just need one more win to get to a bowl game, and Western Carolina is a 2-8 football team.

I know, I know – “Remember The Citadel!” The Bulldogs then and now are a very strong, experienced team that run a gimmick offense, and played a USC team that knew it wasn’t going anywhere. No excuse for it, but the situation has severely changed around these parts.

USC should run the Catamounts out of Williams-Brice Stadium, give the seniors their due and then begin preparing for the big one next week. Put it this way – the Gamecocks have responded to pressure all season, and mostly in a good way. The pressure now is, win this one; or try to win on the road against a rival who’s one of the top teams in the country.

In a period where elections have been screwy subjects, USC needs to pull the first lever. I don’t think there will be any hanging chads to count afterward.

USC 38, WESTERN CAROLINA 14
