Camp Insider: Elliott keeps USC O-linemen prepared for multiple positions

He’s always been about versatility. Shawn Elliott likes his offensive linemen to be able to play their position, and the ones on either side of them.

With at most 13 linemen this year, and six of them having never played a down, he’s finding out where his guys can play.

“The great thing about it, we got guys that feel like they can play them all, so let’s see if they can,” Elliott said on Friday. “Shoot, we don’t ever project where they may be, they may come out here and prove us wrong. So we’ll just kind of let them all go.”

While it seems Brandon Shell will be entrenched at left tackle, the other positions could be fluid. Mike Matulis is working at left guard and Alan Knott at center, with Will Sport and Mason Zandi on the right side. But everybody will get a chance to show what they can do.

Mammoth freshman Zack Bailey took some reps at center the other day. Why?

“You never know,” Elliott said. “You never know what might happen.”
