Gamecocks still standing, seek a new normal

South Carolina won after a weird week.

It will try to win again after two weird weeks.

The shockwave of Steve Spurrier’s resignation and the ascension of Shawn Elliott fed into a win against Vanderbilt, but the Gamecocks couldn’t get back to normal. Their bye week was State Fair week and Fall Break at USC, meaning they were going to have another abnormal schedule.

The positive is they don’t have a game this week. They can head home and relax after two weeks of not knowing what was going to happen next. Everything seemed normal at practice on Tuesday, “Thunderstruck” bleeding into Kanye, and Shawn Elliott unafraid to fire off a three-point into his much larger players.

USC was fine mentally after the Spurrier news and nobody was severely affected by the flood. The distractions this week shouldn’t have any effect, which is crucial – the Gamecocks need to be at their best when they head to Texas a week from Saturday.

Talent won’t get any better as USC continues to try and correct this season. But after surviving the kinds of belts that would have slain a dragon and keeping pinpoint vision through two weeks of off-the-field events, the Gamecocks are still standing.
