USC tennis teams score wins in NCAA openers

It took a little longer than expected thanks to the weather, but the South Carolina women’s tennis team advanced past North Florida 4-0 in the Gamecocks’ NCAA tournament opener Friday at the Carolina Tennis Center.

Rain and lightning delayed the match for about three hours Friday.

The Gamecocks (21-3) advance to face Virginia at 10 a.m. Saturday with a spot in the Sweet 16 on the line. The Cavaliers defeated Old Dominion 4-2 Friday in Columbia.

At Charlottesville, Virginia, the No. 17 South Carolina men’s tennis team (18-9) won its first round matchup over ETSU 4-0 Friday and will face No. 5 Virginia in the second round at 1 p.m. Saturday.
