NCAA OKs extra year for spring sport athletes. USC seniors have decisions to make

A set of 45 South Carolina seniors got good news Monday afternoon: Their Gamecocks careers don’t have to be over just yet.

After the coronavirus outbreak ended spring sports seasons early, the NCAA will extend an extra year of eligibility for all spring sports athletes. Winter athletes were not granted extra eligibility, as their seasons were mostly complete, though events such as the NCAA men’s and women’s basketball tournaments were canceled.

The ability to come back doesn’t guarantee all athletes will return, as some might pursue professional opportunities or just finish up their studies.

Schools will be able to give athletes the same amount or less than they received last year. They can also carry more athletes on scholarship to account for incoming recruits and the surprise returners.

That means baseball will have an expanded roster limit because of COVID-19 pandemic, the only spring sport with such a limit.

Not extending it to winter sports ends the careers of USC basketball stalwarts such as Ty Harris, Mikiah Herbert Harrigan and Maik Kotsar.
