SEC champs! South Carolina women’s soccer wins tournament title
The South Carolina women’s soccer team won the SEC tournament on Sunday with a 1-0 win over Alabama. This year’s conference tournament was played in Pensacola, Florida.
This was the third tournament championship in program history, with the others coming in 2009 and 2019.
“THIRD TIME’S THE CHARM,” the team posted via its official Twitter page.
USC lost to Alabama 2-0 on the road in the 2022 regular season but avenged that loss Sunday by winning the tournament championship.
Junior midfielder Brianna Behm scored the game’s lone goal — her first of the year — from an assist by Catherine Barry. Barry led USC in goals during the tournament with two, and in the regular season with seven.
South Carolina finished the regular season 11-3-4 as the No. 13 team in the United Soccer Coaches poll. The Gamecocks also defeated Ole Miss and Georgia in the SEC tournament, using penalty kicks to overcome the Bulldogs.
USC now advances to this year’s NCAA tournament, where they will host Wake Forest at 6 p.m. Saturday in the first round. The Gamecocks are a No. 3 seed in the tournament.
South Carolina reached the Elite Eight last season before losing to BYU.
