USC nominees for McWhorter Scholarships
Kevin Leithold of the men’s swimming and diving team and Stevi Parker of the women’s soccer team have been nominated for the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship by USC.
The H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship has been presented by the SEC since 1986 to the league’s top male and female scholar-athletes. The SEC will name the recipients of thescholarship on April 28.
Leithold, who made the USC AD Honor Roll seven times, holds USC school records in the 100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard medley relay, 400-yard medley relay, 400-yard freestyle relay and 800-yard freestyle relay.
Parker, who maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout each semester from fall 2012-present, helped lead the team to the program’s first NCAA Elite Eight appearance.
Men’s basketball
South Carolina will face Syracuse, a Final Four team, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. on Nov. 26 as part of the 2016 Brooklyn Hoops Holiday Invitational. The meeting will be the fifth all-time between the two schools and the first since the 2001-02 campaign. Tickets are on sale now via Ticketmaster.
Men’s Tennis
No. 11-seed South Carolina gave third-seeded Texas A&M all it could handle in a tough 4-3 loss in the SEC Tournament quarterfinals at Carolina Tennis Center.
The Gamecocks got the doubles point, thanks to wins at No. 1 from Harrison O’Keefe and Gabriel Friedrich and No. 2 from Alex Fennell and Sam Swank. In singles, USC got wins from Fennell and Andrew Schafer.
With the loss, the Gamecocks finish the season at 14-15, falling one match shy of the record needed to be eligible for selection to the NCAA Tournament.
Women’s Tennis
No. 11 South Carolina had its run in the SEC Tournament halted, suffering a 4-0 defeat to No. 12 Auburn in the quarterfinals at the LSU Tennis Complex. The Tigers claimed a tight doubles point and wins at No. 2 and 4 before clinching with a rally at No. 1.
With the loss, South Carolina (18-7, 9-4) looks onward to the NCAA Selection show on May 3, where it will learn of its destination for the NCAA Regionals. The Gamecocks, who spent five weeks in the ITA Rankings’ Top 10, hope to host one of the 16 regional tournaments for the first time since 2002.
