South Carolina men’s golf advances to match play at NCAA Championships
South Carolina shot 3-under par as a team to shoot up the leader board into seventh place and a spot in match play at the NCAA Championships on Monday.
The Gamecocks, who shot a 277 total and are at 22-over 1,142 for the tournament, will face Illinois in the first round of match play on Tuesday. The Illini finished second after a 4-under 276 in the fourth round.
Texas is the top seed for match play.
Individually, USC’s Will Starke shot a 4-under par 66 on Monday and moved to a tie for 13th place with a four-day total of 4-over 284. Starke climbed 54 spots with his round.
Oregon’s Aaron Wise won the individual title with a 5-under par 275 total.
Also having a good day for the Gamecocks was Sean Kelly, who moved up 40 spots to finish in a tie for 40th overall. Kelly shot 1-under 71 in the final round for a 9-over 289 total.
Matt NeSmith was one shot behind Kelly and tied for 45th place, while Keenan Huskey was another shot back in a tie for 51st.
College of Charleston’s William Rainey had a rough final round, shooting 10-over par 80 to finish in a tie for 51st overall. His four-round total was 11-over par 291.
