USC golf’s Matt NeSmith named first team All-American
South Carolina was ousted in the quarterfinals of match play by Illinois on Tuesday at the NCAA Championships.
The Illini, the second seed, won 4-1 over the seventh-seeded Gamecocks. Freshman Scott Stevens had the lone win for USC, earning a 4 and 3 win over sophomore Dylan Meyer.
Matt NeSmith was named a PING first team All-American, the Golf Coaches Association of America announced Tuesday.
NeSmith is the first golfer in program history to receive first team All-America honors.
NeSmith, who led the Gamecocks and ranked 36th nationally with a 71.24 stroke average this season, won two tournaments in his final year at South Carolina. NeSmith finished his collegiate career with the second-most medalist honors (4) and the lowest stroke average (71.65) in program history.
